The building that the lofts are in is on the national registry of historic places. The Woolworth building is one of the oldest stores in Clarksdale, and it was one of the first five-and-dime stores in the nation. It sold sharply discounted merchandise at fixed prices, and it took out the competition that most merchants offered. It was one of the first stores out there that put merchandise out for the public to hold, choose, and buy. In shops beforehand, merchandise was stored securely behind the counter, and customers told the store clerk what they wanted to purchase too. In the first half of the 20th century, almost every main street in America had a Woolworth’s. This store had a primary place in American society before the turn of the 20th century and until after World War II.
The building features a modern, international type of architecture, and it was en vogue at the time. The style of architecture was largely based on the “rational” use of materials, functional planning, and the rejection of historical look and elaboration. Architects that desired to work in the international style needed to break free from the architectural tradition of the past, and they wanted to use materials that were not common before like glass, steel, and concrete. This is a great building to stay in because you get a real taste of American history. You don’t just get a chance to see what Clarksdale was like in the first half of the American century, but you get to see what it looked like all over America. Woolsworth’s were fixtures all over America. It was normal to see a five-and-dime store on every street corner too.
